Banking on Gardening

I used to garden. I loved gardening. Keri, who helps with this site, also gardens. Hopefully she will write about it in the Community–will you, Keri? Let’s all check to see if she does!!! LOL (laughing on-line, or laughing out loud!).

I loved gardening for many reasons. It gave me healthy food, for one. I knew what was part of my food, and did not worry about ecoli or pesticides or other ‘intruders.’ I diligently planted marigolds around my garden to keep out rabbits. Second, it was so rewarding to see my plants stick their little heads out of the soil, to watch them grow, and then to reap their harvest, however large or small. I suggested to Keri this week that she make a big ritual out of dividing her one blueberry with her friend/partner Justin! I did as much with my one strawberry one year. I LOVED the bounty of the radishes and peppers I would plant. Ad who can find good tomatoes these days, except at farmer’s markets? My sister plants tomato plants each spring near her house (she has no actual ‘garden’) so that she always has a supply of fresh tomatoes when needed. And third, it made me feel productive and self-sustaining, which is always rewarding.

I am sure there were other reasons that I loved gardening, but this article reminds me to put ‘garden space’ on my list of what I want when I purchase my next home! Right now I am at 7800 feet, so it is just too cool to garden here. I will be happy to get to lower elevations, and get my hands dirty in the soil. It is so grounding and cathartic (yet a fourth reason!!).
