Be Prepared

Change Artist: Surviving Change. Illustration Sandy Gullikson

Ready for anything, rainy or sunny, tasty or bland. Caught in-between seasons, wondering what happened to spring. S. Gullikson

Think Metaphorically
A metaphor is a transfer of meaning from one thing to another. I once said that my life felt like I was a bug on a leaf in whitewater rapids. Thinking metaphorically has helped me through many situations. I can make those situations conform to whatever way is helpful to me, for example; profound or funny. It also gives me some detachment, so that I don’t get washed over by the wave. And, it seems to help with understanding situations.

I think of my life changes as the change in a riverbed. Will the change be permanent? What do I need to do to get the river back on course? If the river is going to stay with its new course, what opportunities are on its riverbank - things that were not on the old bank? While it is changing, it is often fairly mucky and yucky and muddy and all those messy things, just as my life felt on occasion. What were the metaphorical hip-waders in my life - the things that made walking through the mud of life more comfortable or palatable? Incidentally, metaphor is often also used in creativity exercises.
