Don’t Bite Off More than You Can Chew

Sailboat taken by a rather large trout: Of course it was spat out immediately because of unsavory halyards and porcupine quills. . . S. Gullikson.
Be Prepared; Stay Prepared
This is a popular motto. Part of thinking ahead is to plan for opportunities, and to prepare your Self for their possible arrival. Education is an act toward the future, as is investing in one’s spirituality, physical well-being or anything else that may help you better pounce on an opportunity that presents itself. It is so distressing to be caught unprepared!
Proactively prepare yourself for the opportunities you want to be able to act on. If it is a particular job you would like to be qualified for, create the skills you will need. If it is a particular person you want to be with, prepare yourself to be the person who will fit their needs.
I am not saying you should lose sight of your self. What I am saying is that if you want to trek the Himalayas, you should start working out now. If you want to be in a relationship with a non-smoker, you should quit smoking now. If you want a career ladder, you should invest in education now.
Luck may just be opportunity meeting preparedness.
