Due to the hazards of aging Alzheimer’s patients wandering off and becoming disoriented, several states have enacted Silver Alert programs, similar to Amber Alerts for children.
The states are Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Ohio, Texas and Virginia. Requirements vary slightly from state to state, but generally the person must be over 65, have a mental impairment, and their disappearance must represent a danger to their health and safety. As the population ages, and life expectancies rise, so does the need for care-giving. In an aging US population, 9 million people take care of someone with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, for example. Yet “most caregivers do not take respite vacations because they see them as an admission of failure, or they worry that something will happen while they are away. Over the years ‘change’ comes to all of us. How we cope with the negative changes and rejoice in the positive changes depends on the individual, and the set of circumstances.
Unfortunately, many of us dwell on the negative changes; those changes that either do not enhance our lifestyle, or, those changes that totally impact our lives whether it be financial, marital or medical, all of which can set us back a few years. It can be devastating and it takes a strong will and a great determination to overcome what has been dealt us.
As we grow older — and I am talking about those of us oldies who are sitting in the waiting room waiting for God to call us — we can reflect on the many changes that took place in our lives over the years; how we coped or, how we rejoiced. In reflection many of these changes that seemed to be difficult to cope with at that time were actually doors opened to us.

I was happy to see that I might become wiser with age!!! I read recently that we can keep our minds active by trying new things, learning new things, rather than repeating the same activities over and over. I am so glad there is hope!!
